Board appoints interim public health officer, approves up-to-$90,000 contract

The Board of Supervisors on Aug. 4 voted unanimously to appoint an interim public health officer and to approve a professional services agreement not to exceed $90,000 for up to six months.
Health Services Director Lisa Faraco told the board the previous contractor declined to continue and "we have 2 patients that are in hospital unable to be released to their families because we don't have a health officer who can sign off," and described that inability to sign medical releases as the immediate justification for adding the extra agenda item. County counsel explained the emergency-addition process under the Government Code. After a brief public comment period, the board returned from closed session and approved the appointment and contract, authorizing the director to sign.
The contract is framed as short-term coverage while the department runs a request for proposals and pursues other contractor options. Faraco said the selected clinician is on approved dual assignment with another jurisdiction and that the arrangement has been accepted by that employer and the California Department of Public Health as temporary coverage.
The board’s formal motions recorded the appointment and the professional services agreement; both motions passed 5–0.
