Board approves MOAs for Getwell Road widening and Swinnea/McIngvale/Pleasant Hill intersection work

DeSoto County supervisors approved memoranda of agreement on June 19 to move forward with two transportation projects: intersection improvements at Swinnea/McIngvale/Pleasant Hill and a segment of the Getwell Road widening project covering the Hernando portion. Waggoner Engineering's Will Bush told the Board the intersection MOA covers the first two project phases and required utility relocations and will use 100% federal funds; the Getwell Road widening is an 80% federal / 20% local match with the County sharing the local 20% (10% Hernando, 10% County).
The Board authorized the County's Board Attorney to work on an interlocal agreement with the City of Hernando and approved pay applications related to other road projects at the meeting. Supervisor Lee Caldwell moved the MOA approvals; motions passed unanimously. The actions allow the county to proceed with engineering selection and coordinate local matching funds required by the federal grants.
Why it matters: approval commits the county to match portions of federally funded capital improvements and begins the contracting and engineering steps required to widen a major corridor, which will affect traffic patterns and future development.
