April Wright, outreach and education librarian for NNLM Region 1, opened a recorded webinar introducing Dr. Rebecca Mateo, a health science specialist and web content manager at the National Center for PTSD (Department of Veterans Affairs).
Dr. Mateo framed the session as a practical overview for librarians, clinicians and public-health partners, saying the center's materials are free to download or order and designed to support outreach and shared decision-making. "All of the materials that I will share with you are either freely available on our website or available for you to order and share at no cost," she said.
The presentation covered PTSD basics (diagnosis requires at least one month after a trauma), risk factors, and evidence-based treatments. Dr. Mateo highlighted the center's AboutFace veteran stories, a PTSD treatment decision aid, short animated videos for social sharing, and mobile apps including PTSD Coach and PTSD Family Coach.
She also reviewed crisis options and access pathways: in behavioral-health crises use 988 (not 911), and callers can press 1 within 988 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line. Dr. Mateo noted resources to help find clinicians (VA locators, APA, Psychology Today, SAMHSA), and programs for providers (free continuing education and a consultation service).
