Residents urge stronger enforcement and repairs at Barfield tennis courts

Residents and longtime users of Barfield (Bradfield) Tennis Courts praised recent repaving but said ongoing problems with lighting, skateboarding damage and hostile behavior threaten continued use. Darren Williams, a Phoenix High School teacher and lifelong Hampton resident who helps maintain the courts, described repeated incidents of skaters scuffing and creating divots, loud profane music, and threats toward users; he said police response has been inconsistent.
The City Manager thanked Williams and Councilwoman Harper for raising the issue, said parks staff identified wiring challenges and that a contractor is scheduled to be on site Tuesday, Jan. 20 to repair lighting. He also said staff will work with Parks & Recreation to schedule park ranger visits at identified times when problems occur to enforce rules and protect users. Williams asked for more periodic enforcement and the city said it would follow up after the meeting.
