Chief Case explained the department's current capabilities, said facial recognition is prohibited by municipal policy and described a 14‑day retention period for non‑criminal footage.
Chief Case told the assembly that some social‑media posts overstated the department's current capabilities. "It's factually incorrect. A misrepresentation," he said when asked whether a viral post reflected APD's technology. Members pressed for legislative guardrails and auditing of information‑sharing with federal partners; some argued postponement was needed so the assembly could consider code changes and a wider work session. The body voted to postpone further action and schedule additional committee review and public briefings before spending significant funds on the build‑out.
Members also debated how license‑plate readers, drone object‑tracking and third‑party camera feeds would be integrated into the RTCC and asked for clarity in retention schedules and audit reporting. Chief Case said some object‑recognition features (e.g., drone locking to an identified vehicle) are planned, but other AI capabilities are constrained by system capacity and transmission limitations and would require further discussion before activation.
