Oconee County holds second hearing on proposed 2026 property millage rates

The moderator opened a second public hearing on the county’s proposed 2026 property millage rates and summarized digest numbers from the Oconee County tax commissioner’s office. He said the incorporated digest rose from about $392,000,000 in 2025 to $424,000,000 in 2026, with $19,000,000 counted as real growth; the unincorporated digest rose from $3,300,000,000 to $3,500,000,000, with $176,000,000 in real growth.
“The recommended rates will generate additional property taxes of $788,124 over the taxes generated in 2025,” the moderator said. He described the calculated rollback rates provided by the tax commissioner (unincorporated 4.157; incorporated 4.984) and presented the board’s recommended 2026 millage rates: unincorporated 4.124 (below the rollback) and incorporated 5.154 (unchanged from 2025). The moderator said approximately $824,893 in additional tax revenue would be generated at the rollback rates and that the board’s recommendation produces $788,124 in additional revenue compared with 2025.
The moderator said state law requires the county to hold a tax increase hearing on rates calculated from the gross digest and that a third hearing and formal adoption are scheduled for the board’s Aug. 25 meeting. No public comments were offered during this hearing and the moderator closed the public hearing before moving on to the regular meeting agenda.
The board will consider final adoption of the millage rates at its Aug. 25 meeting.
