"My children deserve to have me fully present in their lives and they should not have to endure hatred, harassment, or criticism because their mother serves in public office," Spillman said, explaining the personal factors behind her decision. She said the decision is not a reaction to recent calls for her resignation but the result of months of reflection and concerns about the toll the role has taken on her health.
Spillman said she remained proud of her service and the work shedone on behalf of students, families and staff, and that she planned to continue participating through her final meeting. The announcement came at the start of a special session called to consider an independent review and investigation; Spillman reiterated her commitment to a smooth transition and to finishing her work through Aug. 13.
The board did not take action related to the resignation at the meeting; Spillman said she will continue to carry out her duties until her stated final meeting date.
