City community development staff told the commission they updated the mural map on the city's GIS website and that Jamie is leading development of a themed historic walking tour story map intended to let residents and visitors explore different interests and neighborhoods.
Danny said staff expect to have the story-map system available by next summer and that the office is coordinating with the Historic Preservation Commission. ‘‘We updated the mural map on our GIS website with that story map from a while back,’’ Danny said. He also said staff plan to issue an RFP for a Seward-branded wayfinding and signage system to improve visitor movement and reduce local congestion; cruise-ship head-tax funds were mentioned as a possible funding source for signage and wayfinding work.
Staff also suggested a future economic study tied to the comprehensive plan to quantify tourism impacts, including cruise-ship passengers versus independent travelers, to guide long-term planning and balance a seasonal economy with year-round community needs.
