The board chair reported that staff have compiled voting patterns, precinct votes and population data to support consideration of consolidation or division of precincts. He said northwest Harnett is growing rapidly while other areas have lost population, and the county will weigh distances between voters and polling places when proposing changes; he noted there are few public buildings in some parts of northern Harnett County to host polling sites.
The chair stressed that any consolidation plan must be submitted to the State Board of Elections and that a change could not take effect before the November election because state approval is required. The board said staff will bring figures, maps and a presentation to the next meeting so members can review specific recommendations before any vote.
