El Monte Union trustees honor FBLA national champion Roy Tong

At its Aug. 5 meeting the El Monte Union High School District Board of Trustees recognized South El Monte High School’s FBLA chapter and presented a certificate to Roy Tong, who placed first in computer applications at the 2026 FBLA National Leadership Conference.
The El Monte Union High School District Board of Trustees on Aug. 5 formally recognized South El Monte High School’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter and honored Roy Tong for winning first place in computer applications at the 2026 FBLA National Leadership Conference in San Antonio.
“His national championship is not only an incredible personal accomplishment, but is also believed to be the first FBLA national champion earned by a student in El Monte Union High School District,” Superintendent Dr. Zuniga said as he presented a certificate and described Roy’s two-hour competition and technical achievement. Principal Olga Lopez and board members joined students and advisers at the dais for photographs and remarks.
Trustees praised the chapter advisers Tamley Wong and Sylvia Casillas and highlighted that the chapter earned the National Gold Champion Chapter banner and a Gold Seal Chapter award of merit, placing it among the top 15% of active chapters. Principal Olga Lopez thanked teachers and parents for their support and urged the student leaders to build on the accomplishment.
The recognition was accompanied by a presentation of certificates from the board and a certificate from state Sen. Susan Rubio’s office, represented at the meeting by Elena Robles.
