The Brown County Board of Commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding to formalize a permanent school resource officer (SRO) position at the county high school, with the commission’s signature to be executed only if the school’s grant application is approved. The agreement, presented to the board for 2026, would place one full-time officer at the high school and allow for a second roving officer to cover other campuses if additional grant funding is secured.
Commissioner 7, who discussed the grant change and the SRO’s role, said the grant administration shifted this year from the Department of Education to the Department of Homeland Security and that an audit prompted the revised MOU language. He argued the SRO program “most definitely makes the school safer,” and described long-term relationship-building between officers and students. The board emphasized the approval is contingent on the school receiving the grant by Sept. 1; if the grant is not approved, the county will revert to the previous agreement and the council will address funding details. A motion to approve the MOU upon receipt of the grant was moved and seconded and recorded as passing on roll call.
