County reports progress on ADA transition plan; Parks & Rec wins $60,000 youth mentoring grant

Calvert County's Department of Community Resources presented a one‑year update on the Americans with Disabilities Act self‑evaluation and transition plan adopted in September 2024. Special projects manager Nikko Nash said 17 of 46 policy and procedural items are complete, 13 are in progress and 16 have not started. "We have clear momentum with 65% of policy and procedural items either completed or underway," Nash said, noting a real‑time dashboard to track departmental implementation.
Staff told commissioners that the FY26 operating and capital budgets include resources for ADA work: $1 million in capital commitment for building compliance (parking, ramps, accessible routes), and $12,000 in operating funds for Braille materials and American Sign Language interpretation services. Nash said General Services will oversee barrier‑removal projects planned this fiscal year and departments will coordinate closures and scheduling with minimal public disruption.
Separately, Parks & Recreation presented the National Recreation and Park Association offer of an additional $60,000 grant to continue a youth mentoring program focused on children affected by substance misuse. Recreation Division Chief Nate Smith described a 2.5‑year program extension that will fund group and one‑to‑one mentorship, family engagement and staff training; commissioners voted to authorize the county to sign the memorandum of understanding and adopt the budget amendment to accept the grant.
Commissioners praised interdepartmental collaboration on both efforts and asked staff to continue public outreach and reporting on ADA implementation steps and grant performance.
