Laura McLaughlin, the homeowner and applicant, told the commission she and her husband bought the house in 2013 and have maintained its historic character. “We're just looking at making some improvements, putting on a covered porch with some dental crown molding, bluestone walkway with, rot dark wrought iron, rails, some copper over the bay windows, removing the current gutter system on the bay windows, and, new wood shutters,” McLaughlin said, listing proposed exterior changes intended to preserve and slightly modernize the facade. Commission members praised the choice of hinged shutters and the proposed porch details as authentic to the home's character.
A commissioner moved to approve the permit-fee waiver and expedited processing; the motion was seconded and carried on a roll-call vote with all present members recorded as "aye." The commission then voted to recommend a matching grant to the village board to fund the porch and front-facade improvements. The commission did not place conditions on the recommendation at the hearing.
Next steps: the recommendation for a matching grant will proceed to the village board for a final decision.
