The Village of Shorewood board on June 10 adopted an ordinance authorizing a $500 administrative fee when probable cause exists to believe a vehicle was used in connection with certain criminal or traffic offenses. The measure, prepared by the village legal firm and tied to Section 5‑11‑208‑7 of the Illinois Vehicle Code, also requires notice and a hearing before the village administrative adjudication officer.
The police chief, presenting the ordinance, said: "The proposed ordinance would authorize a $500 administrative fee when a probable cause exists to believe that vehicle is used in connection with the commission of a certain criminal or traffic offense." Trustees pressed staff on hearing timing and whether the fee would replace storage charges; the chief said emergency hearings could be scheduled within 40 hours and that the fee would cover impound‑related costs rather than a separate storage fee. Trustee Selfridge moved to approve and the board waived the second reading and approved the ordinance on a roll‑call vote.
