Board approves request to close Route 72 for July 4 parade

The Village of Kirkland Board of Trustees voted on April 6 to approve Resolution 2026-04 requesting the Illinois Department of Transportation temporarily close Route 72 (Main Street) for the Kirkland Lions Club Fourth of July parade.
Trustee Chambers moved for approval and Trustee Fruit seconded; the roll-call vote was unanimous. The resolution requests closure of Route 72 from Pearl Street to Sixth Street between approximately 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, 2026 and specifies a detour (north on Sixth Street to North Street; east on North Street to Pearl Street; south on Pearl back to Route 72). The resolution requires the village to assume responsibility for traffic control, provide police officers or authorized flaggers at the village's expense, maintain detour routes, and supply a comprehensive general liability insurance policy naming IDOT and its officials as additional insured for $1,000,000/$2,000,000 aggregate.
The board approved the measure and will forward the resolution to IDOT as the village's formal request for permission to close the state highway for the parade.
