Shorewood to buy 19 radios, join Will County p25 system for public works

Public works staff told the board the village's existing radio system—provided free for more than a decade—will be repurposed by the provider, and recommended migrating to the Will County P25 digital radio system. Mr. McCluskey said the county offers operability at no system-cost and that Shorewood needs only to buy hardware for the vehicles.
"We are looking to move to the Will County p 25 digital radio system. There is no cost with the Will County, p 25 radio system. The cost is hardware," Mr. McCluskey said, explaining the purchase would ensure village crews can communicate village-wide and support snow operations first.
The board approved purchase and installation of 19 mobile radios, one portable and one patch connection for Public Works at a total cost of $58,629.04. Trustees also approved a resolution authorizing an intergovernmental agreement with Will County; staff said the language in the agreement changes from "interoperability" to "operability" because public works will use the county system directly for operations instead of only as a backup.
Trustees asked about the system's capacity to add radios over time; staff said Will County's system has sufficient spectrum and hardware capacity. The village will retain some existing radios from public-works vehicles for potential police backup use.
