Shorewood approves new gateway signs, will test two HDU prototypes

The Village of Shorewood board approved purchases for five gateway signs on Jan. 28, 2025, moving ahead with three wooden signs from Plainfield Signs and two HDU (high-density urethane) prototype signs to test durability.
Ms. Engle told trustees the revised plan reduces sign size to roughly 3.5 feet by 6.5 feet to lower costs while remaining readable and that staff had identified five potential locations, including the northern gateway from Joliet, the YMCA on Jefferson Street, Sile Road adjacent to Minooka School District property, the River Road bridge approach and the former public works site off Route 59. "So we've reduced the size of the signs a little bit," Ms. Engle said, explaining the cost and siting rationale.
Plainfield Signs quoted $5,120 per wooden sign (three signs, $15,360 total) and Express/Express Signs quoted $10,596 for two HDU signs; staff said the total project cost is $25,956, about $1,000 over budget. Trustees asked whether either vendor included contingency language for additional excavation or footing work. Ms. Engle said Plainfield's quote did not list contingencies and that Express' contract had allowance for additional work; public-works staff offered to inspect sites and coordinate with contractors if extra work proved necessary.
On roll call the board approved the Plainfield wooden signs and then approved the two HDU signs; the HDU purchase passed with one 'No' vote recorded during the roll call.
