Byron-Bergen reports rise in special education enrollment; department outlines supports

The Director of Instructional Services reported that special education enrollment in the Byron-Bergen Central School District increased from 85 students last year to 101 this year, with fifth and tenth grades showing the largest counts. "The goal of the District’s Special Education program is to maximize the academic and functional achievement of all students with disabilities," the report said.
Administrators provided inclusion statistics: 42 students spend 80% or more of the day in the regular classroom, while 18 students spend less than 40% in the general classroom. The department is onboarding three new Special Education teachers and a Speech Pathologist, expanding professional development on IEP accommodations, developing a Case Manager Handbook and a Guide to Writing an IEP, and improving communication with families, especially around CPSE exits and transitions to kindergarten.
