The Town Board of Canajoharie voted to adopt Resolution #3 of 2025 supporting the nomination and corridor management plan for the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York Scenic Byway. The resolution, sponsored by Councilman William Armitstead and seconded by Councilman Rodney Young, affirms the town’s intent to partner with other municipalities on stewardship, economic development, and byway programming.
The resolution also contains a local restriction: the town confirmed it "will not approve any requests for new off‑premise outdoor advertising signs along the designated Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York Scenic Byway route." The minutes record the vote with Michael Muhlebeck (Town Supervisor), William Armitstead, Rodney Young, Raymond Kiefl and Michael Ehrenreich recorded as voting in favor. The action is recorded as Resolution #3 (2025).
Board members said the designation could help protect historic resources and expand visitation and grant opportunities along the 544‑mile corridor. The town will coordinate with the byway steering committee and adjacent municipalities on next steps and any implementation support requested by the corridor management plan.
