Gates honors 25-year Special Police volunteer; appoints recruit officer to academy

The Gates Town Board on July 6 recognized Sergeant Mic Silivestro for 25 years of volunteer service with the Gates Special Police and approved the appointment of a new recruit officer to the Monroe County Police Academy.
Police Chief Rob Long described the Special Police as volunteers who help with checkpoints, traffic control during storms and emergency responses, and training for future officers. Chief Long presented Silivestro with a memorial plaque "In recognition of your 25 years of dedicated volunteer service to the Gates Special Police," and said Mic has been "the primary training officer for the Special Police" during the program's recent years. Mic Silivestro thanked the department and his family for the recognition.
The board unanimously approved Resolution 118-26 to appoint Recruit Officer Aiden McKenzie to the Gates Police Department to attend the June 24, 2026 Police Academy. Chief Long introduced McKenzie as a Gates resident and SUNY Brockport graduate who had volunteered with the Special Police since May 2024. After the board vote, Chief Long administered the oath while McKenzie's father held the Bible; McKenzie thanked officers and volunteers who mentored him. "It was an honor to be able to be a Police Officer," McKenzie said during his remarks.
