District reports reading gains, outlines PD and curriculum review

Skokie School District 68 staff presented iReady results and a preliminary professional development plan that administrators say will focus on vocabulary, informational text and math modeling to support multilingual learners and students with IEPs.
Christie, the staff presenter, said the district's median progress toward typical reading growth was above 100%: "that puts us this is a median so that puts us over the 100%, 124% to be precise." She walked the board through subgroup results and explained that stretch-growth targets apply only to students who begin below grade level. "The stretch growth is...for students that perform below grade level in the beginning of [the] diagnostic," she said.
Administrators said literacy work will be prioritized in the next curriculum cycle. The superintendent added that the district postponed some iReady reporting to spring so the district could present true fall-to-spring growth, and staff recommended targeted PD next year emphasizing tiered vocabulary and informational text for multilingual learners. The board asked whether an external equity audit would be compared to Five Essentials results; administration replied they will review formats and crosswalk findings when the audit is delivered.
