Board reviews first readings of multiple policy updates, including a new AI policy and College Board School Day program

On first reading the board reviewed several policy revisions and new policies required by state code: employee suspension grievance rights, extended probation for support staff, academic planning/course selection, College Board School Day, an artificial‑intelligence framework, threat assessment training updates, attendance policy revisions, financial aid guidance, student-athlete heat safety, and emergency response updates.
Board staff presented first readings of multiple policy changes and new policies on Aug. 5, many of which reflect state code changes or VSBA recommendations.
Miss Ruth reviewed changes to the suspension-of-employees policy (GCPF), noting that "effective 07/01/2026, all suspensions regardless of the length ... the employee has grievance rights." She also reviewed recommended changes to support-staff probation (GDB), proposing an extension from six months to 12 months and application of probation when support staff move into new roles.
Dr. Jennifer Thomason reviewed three new or updated policies: IK (academic planning and course selection), ILBC (College Board School Day program, naming SAT/PSAT participation during the school day and accommodations), and IAI (artificial intelligence). On IAI she said the policy "establishes Hampton City Schools framework for the responsible use of artificial intelligence ... limits the use of AI to division approved tools, protects students and staff data, and outlines responsibilities for students, teachers and staff." Board members asked clarifying questions, including whether the ACT would be included in ILBC and whether the AI policy should include annual board review and reapproval given rapid change.
Miss Hatcher presented updates recommended by VSBA to EBB (threat assessment teams), JED (attendance), JLB (financial aid information), JAG (student-athlete extreme heat safety), and JM (emergency response and student safety); she noted required training updates, safe-storage guidance and procedural clarifications to match state law.
