Kay County discusses building an Emergency Management facility; commissioners to explore Kaw Nation partnership

Emergency Management Director Brian Muret described a need for an Emergency Management building to provide office space and storage for response equipment, including water buffaloes and other response resources. Chairman Jeff Kreger said he would support constructing the building at the District 3 yard, but the board took no formal action on a location or construction plan.
Commissioner Jason Shanks urged staff to explore a partnership with the Kaw Nation, saying the Kaw Nation ‘‘has an Emergency Management building located on the north side of Ponca City that is fully equipped with emergency resources but has reportedly never been used.’’ District Attorney Brian Hermanson advised that a mutual agreement could be established to facilitate such a partnership. Shanks said he would determine whether the facility is climate-controlled so bottled water could be stored and that he would contact the Kaw Nation to discuss possibilities.
