Ameren advisor recommends VFDs for Smithton wastewater plant; utility may cover 80% of cost

Rob Moss, a small-business energy advisor with Ameren Illinois, told the Village of Smithton on July 28 that installing variable-frequency drives (VFDs) on wastewater-plant motors could reduce run time and energy use. He said Ameren would cover 80% of the cost and that the utility charges no fee for an on-site meeting.

Moss recommended starting by meeting with electricians and insulation contractors and coordinating incentive applications with Ameren. He advised that projects with incentives over $15,000 require preapproval and that contractors must be registered with the Illinois Commerce Commission; he offered to put Village Administrator George Liyeos in touch with contractors.
