Supporters ask Berkeley to name a major street for Daniel Ellsberg; council refers naming request to commission

Speakers from the Peace & Justice Commission, the Western States Legal Foundation and friends of Daniel Ellsberg urged the council to name a "major street" in Berkeley for Ellsberg in recognition of his work on nuclear disarmament and transparency. Grace Morizawa, chair of the Peace & Justice Commission, said the commission supported expediting the request and noted it need not be a long street to be meaningful.
Jackie Cabasso of the Western States Legal Foundation recalled presenting a proclamation for Ellsberg in 2023 and said, "With his passing, it is only right that Berkeley name a major city street in honor of Daniel Ellsberg." Patricia Ellsberg, his widow, thanked the council and described his life's work in opposing nuclear weapons. The mayor moved the street-naming resolution to the consent calendar and asked that the Transportation & Infrastructure Commission consider location and neighborhood input as prescribed in city policy.
