Committee splits on fire-station exterior; forwards straw poll and public feedback to Select Board

Architect Paolo Carissimi of TGAS presented revised site and elevation plans and three material palettes for the proposed Orleans fire station: a unified clapboard option (Option 1), a clapboard with a gray brick apparatus bay (Option 2), and a variant with red brick on the apparatus bay (Option 3). Paolo said the program—five apparatus bays, living quarters and a mezzanine/training tower—determined the building massing and that the team aimed to respond to community comments on color and trim.
During public comment residents and local architects repeatedly praised Option 1's calmer, more residential look. "Out of the 3, personally, I think this 1st view, this 1st 1 is probably the most aesthetically pleasing," resident Megyn Kelly said, urging less contrast and fewer bright elements such as red doors and large light poles. Committee members debated durability, maintenance and scale: some favored brick for its longevity on the apparatus side; others said clapboard and composite shingles were easier to repair and better fit neighborhood scale.
After discussion the committee conducted a first-choice-only straw poll: five members selected Option 2 (gray brick apparatus bay) and four selected Option 1 (unified clapboard). The committee voted to forward that poll, the public comments recorded tonight and the committee’s notes to the Select Board (agenda item 10) so the Select Board can decide whether to refine designs or make a final selection at its upcoming meeting.
