A board member reported the district submitted materials to Duo Dogs and the organization accepted them for consideration of a facility dog at Beecher High School. The staff will select the dog best suited to district needs; Duo Dogs retains legal ownership of all facility dogs until they are formally retired from service, the board was told. Handlers in good standing with Duo Dogs are eligible to adopt a dog when it retires.
The presenter said a five-day training is scheduled with all handlers once a placement is finalized. "Duo retains legal ownership of all facility dogs until they are formally retired from service," the board member said. Board members expressed optimism that the dog will be a benefit to students and staff. No final placement was approved at the meeting; staff will notify the board when Duo Dogs selects a matched dog.
