Cathy Hannan, the administrative coordinator for Vernon County, told the planning commission the county board’s long‑range planning process identified general zoning as a priority for the board. "The board recently went through a long range planning session and general zoning was identified as the priority for the county board," Hannan said during the workshop.
Commissioners and staff discussed the central choices that follow: should zoning be adopted countywide, handled town‑by‑town, or implemented as a county ordinance with individual towns opting in? Becky Roberts, the UW Extension presenter, framed the policy tradeoffs and administrative questions that follow a decision to pursue zoning: whether a county zoning administrator will manage permits, whether conditional uses are decided at staff level or by the plan commission, and how to structure appeals.
