Residents urge McKinney to apply consistent proclamation standards after Ramadan, Father's Day discrepancy

Multiple residents and activists addressed the council about what they described as inconsistent treatment of proclamation requests. Speakers representing Citizens Defending Freedom and allied residents said the council issued a 30-day proclamation for Ramadan but only issued a one-day proclamation for a citizen-requested 'Responsible Fatherhood Month,' and they urged the city to apply neutral, consistent standards.

Debbie Lindstrom introduced the group's position, asking the council to "recognize responsible fatherhood month to make the scales even." Mike Madden and Jeff Hall, among other speakers, cited census and research data and asked for equal treatment: Hall noted the Ramadan proclamation covered February 17–March 19 and said the city's response to the fatherhood request (one day, June 21) felt inconsistent. "If Ramadan is worthy of a month long proclamation from this city, then a documented crisis affecting 1 in 3 Texas children is worthy of 30 days," said Mike Madden. Shannon Ayers read a model proclamation drafted by the group and urged council to adopt it.

Several speakers asked the council to adopt clear, viewpoint-neutral guidelines for all proclamations or to stop issuing proclamations that appear to favor particular groups. Council did not make an immediate policy change at the meeting; councilmembers acknowledged the comments and said they would consider consistency in future proclamations.
