The San Juan County Commission approved an agent-of-record transfer to Intermountain Insurance Services Aug. 4 after a presentation from the broker and local advocates.
Presenters emphasized that the transfer would change only the county’s broker—not its insurance carriers—and that in-person service, local relationships and deeper claim analysis had produced notable premium improvements for similar rural counties. "We're invested. We're in person," one representative said, describing regular on-site support to work through claims and appeals.
Commissioners pressed for clarity about time commitments and whether the relationship would create long-term obligations; Intermountain said the arrangement is service-oriented without a binding long-term contract and that the county could terminate if expectations were not met. After discussion and a motion to approve, the commission voted in favor of the transfer.
Staff and the vendor agreed to follow up with details requested by commissioners, and the commission noted it would review contract language and savings projections before any substantive plan changes were implemented.
