UNCW RISE program names six New Hanover recipients in special education residency

Dr. Sharon Richter of UNCW's Watson College of Education told the board the RISE residency program seeks residency‑licensure special education teachers and that New Hanover County had six of the 10 statewide scholarship recipients.
"All 6 of these, residency licensure teachers were already working in our schools in an uncertified capacity, and we're all just very grateful for their ongoing commitment to students with disabilities and to New Hanover County Schools," Dr. Richter said, introducing the scholars and noting they committed to becoming special education teachers upon graduation.
The program targets individuals who hold undergraduate degrees in other fields and now pursue licensure through residency, allowing the district to retain experienced staff while they complete certification requirements. The board and district staff invited the scholars forward to introduce themselves by name and school.
