Council recognizes youth baseball/softball teams; mayor highlights splash pad and Sam's Club openings

The council honored Lebanon youth baseball and softball teams with a proclamation celebrating recent district, state and regional accomplishments. Wayne Oakley, co-director of youth softball, introduced the teams and coaches and recounted state and Southeast Regional results; the council read a proclamation recognizing the 12-and-under all-star team's postseason run.
Mayor and councilors also highlighted recent community projects: a Don Fox Park splash pad funded in part by a TDEC grant the mayor described as "over $300,000" with a matching local commitment; the ribbon-cutting for the Square Park; and a Sam's Club grand opening the mayor said brought significant visitor traffic and local spending. Bill Potter, representing Lebanon Youth Baseball and Softball Association, told the council two boys' teams had won state tournaments and that dozens of hotel-room nights and restaurant sales followed local tournaments. "22 teams were here," he said, noting positive economic benefits during tournament weeks.
Councilors used the announcements to thank staff and volunteers and to note the projects generally came in on or under budget. The recognitions concluded before the council moved into routine business and a series of contract and budget votes.
