FCPS expands weapons screening (OpenGate) at secondary schools after pilot

Pervis Dawson told webinar attendees that OpenGate weapons detection technology is installed at the main entrances of middle, high and secondary schools and at several other student entry points. He said the system is harmless and was piloted before a full rollout in the 2025–26 school year.
Dawson said the step aims to protect students and staff and asked families to expect small inconveniences as people learn new screening routines, such as removing scissors or laptops from bags when entering school buildings.
