Public works reports: water meter replacement 73% complete; wastewater resiliency nearing finish

Public works staff gave a multi-item update on infrastructure projects supporting the city's water, wastewater and stormwater systems. The water meter replacement project is 73% complete, and staff said larger commercial meter installations will start soon; improved metering may cause some high-volume customers to see billing increases once new meters are in service.
"The water meter replacement project is currently 73% complete," the public works presenter said, and staff added the Norman H. Larkin wastewater treatment plant resiliency project is nearing completion with generator and power-control upgrades to keep the plant operational during primary power failures. Staff also reported progress on asset inventory work, flow meters, hydraulic modeling, and a rate study being performed at no cost by the North Carolina Rural Water Association. Council thanked staff and asked follow-up questions about nonlethal police equipment and other items before moving on.
