Reinbeck council holds hearing, gives first reading to utility rate increases

The Reinbeck City Council opened a public hearing at 6:03 p.m. on May 4 on two ordinances proposing new utility rates and gave both ordinances their first reading after closing the hearing without public comment.
The ordinances, filed as Ordinance #2026-06OR (water) and Ordinance #2026-07OR (garbage & recycling), propose that "Water rates will increase 2% and garbage & recycling rates will increase $ .50 each." The hearing was opened and closed within two minutes; the council voted on the first reading by roll call with Wambold, Pease, Johnson, Trepp and Bueghly all voting aye. The council set the ordinances’ second reading for June 1, 2026.
The measures would change customer charges for municipal water and for garbage and recycling collection. The council did not receive written or oral comments during the hearing and did not amend the proposed language during the meeting. If adopted on second reading, the new rates would be enacted according to the ordinances’ effective date and state law review processes.
