Dunsmuir officials announced on Tuesday that the city has received a Storm Ready designation from the National Weather Service Medford office, a recognition the presenter said documents work the city already completed on emergency planning and community outreach.
"Dunsmuir is now a Storm Ready community," Steven Decatur said during a brief presentation, describing the designation as recognition for meeting emergency operations planning, coordination with the National Weather Service and community preparedness requirements. Decatur said much of the documentation relied on the city's recently adopted emergency operations plan.
Why it matters: The designation signals an organized, proactive approach to hazardous-weather planning and strengthens the city's link to regional weather briefings and alerts, staff said. Decatur said the city added Storm Ready information to Dunsmuir's preparedness webpage and created preparedness flyers to distribute at events such as Firewise meetings and green-waste days.
Council members asked whether the program carried any insurance incentives or state incentives; Decatur said it does not. "This program doesn't have any incentives associated with it," he said, noting that the city could cite the designation in future grant applications.
Decatur also said the city has offered to host a National Weather Service storm-spotter class if the regional office resumes those volunteer trainings. Staff said they will continue outreach work and include the Storm Ready signage and materials in community events.
The presentation concluded with the council accepting questions from members and acknowledging Decatur's work to secure the designation.
