Bettsville firefighters report training, calls and a $18,000 operating shortfall this year

The fire representative said the department had seven calls in June, including a fire alarm and a gas leak in Bettsville, and thanked several volunteers by name for stepping up.
"So in June, we had a total of 7 calls," Fire department representative said during the report, and later named Janet Jett, Jacob Snell and Bill Miller among volunteers receiving thanks. Clerk (first reference as Clerk) told council that after payroll and operating costs the department would have "approximately $18,400 to operate for this year" against a $41,002.80 budget, leaving an estimated $18,007.35 shortfall tied to Liberty Township funding.
Council members pledged support if needs arise: "We're here to support you," Chair said during the discussion. Officials discussed monitoring spending, budgeting from the general fund for critical items and pursuing grant or township-based cost-sharing where possible. The council directed staff to watch the numbers and return with options if deficits deepen.
