Resident asks South Roxana to allow chickens; chief requests sample ordinances

At the Nov. 6 meeting resident Jeffrey Bowers asked the South Roxana Village Board to amend the village code that currently prohibits chickens within village limits so he could keep chickens and a rooster. Bowers said chickens help with nuisances such as ants.
Chief Bob Coles explained the existing ordinance "was put into place many years ago to ward off wild animals into the village." Coles asked Amber Schultz to compile examples of other municipalities that permit chickens and provide proof of their ordinances so he could review possible changes.
No amendment or formal action was taken at the meeting; the chief requested comparative ordinance text and supporting evidence for consideration.
