Vernon County panel reviews farmland-preservation templates; staff to invite nutrient-plan expert

The Vernon County Land Use Review Committee discussed farmland-preservation templates and agreed to continue informal review before drafting an ordinance. Attorney (Speaker 3) warned that preservation language can be useful but may "go overboard in terms of restricting residential placements in rural areas," urging the group to balance protection of farmland with property owners' rights. Meeting participant (Speaker 8) recommended inviting an expert — "maybe having David Hattenbach come in" — to explain nutrient-management plans that let farmers qualify for tax credits and to outline what implementation would mean for the county.
Members noted templates from six townships and several counties were generally similar but differed on minimum lot sizes and definitions. Chair asked committee members to resend township versions they had and to return with marked preferences so the committee could "review the two options and see which one has a base, and then we can adjust from there."
