Taft police report 889 incident cases in July; council asks about heat-related trends

The Taft Police Department presented July statistics to the City Council Aug. 4 showing 889 total incident cases, 375 calls for service, 514 officer‑initiated incidents, 84 traffic stops and 104 total cases written. The department reported 59 arrests in July, including 51 misdemeanor arrests and 8 felony arrests.
"We had total incident cases of 889, calls for service, 375, officer initiated incidents..." the police chief said while summarizing the monthly report.
Council members asked whether the unusually hot weather was driving higher crime or more visible homelessness. Council member Shavira asked whether crime increases with heat and whether the city should be more vigilant about people congregating in shaded spots.
The chief replied that when temperatures reach extreme highs crime often decreases but that more people and encampments may cluster in shaded areas such as Rails‑to‑Trails and downtown plazas, increasing calls for service in those locations. He urged respectful behavior and responsible pet control and noted that officers and the citizen patrol remain active.
Mayor Noor thanked the police for work on impaired‑driving enforcement, and council members said they appreciated the department's proactive efforts.
