KYTC wins BUILD award to add nearly 400 truck parking spaces across seven sites

Jason Sewell and Susan Oatman described a BUILD grant award that will expand truck parking capacity across seven existing Kentucky sites by nearly 400 spaces. Sewell said the project pairs $25,000,000 from the BUILD program with about $13,900,000 in other federal funds and just under $10,000,000 in state road funds.
"This grant is going to add nearly 400 spaces to already existing sites, in seven locations," Sewell said, and KYTC expects to let the first site for construction in the next few months and to let all projects within about 16 months. When Representative Blanton asked whether the projects will include building upgrades such as restrooms, Sewell said additional vertical construction will depend on how many spaces are added and will be evaluated during implementation.
Several members urged the cabinet to include adult changing stations and other accessible facilities in the design of any new or expanded rest-area buildings. The committee did not take formal action; members requested further details on site locations and phased construction timelines.
