KYTC says nearly $900M in FY26 construction lettings; expects roughly $300M more this year

Jason Sewell, deputy state highway engineer at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, told the Committee on Transportation that "so far here in calendar year '26, KYTC has awarded nearly $900,000,000 to construction through the June letting." He said about $508,000,000 of that total came through standard lettings and roughly $388,000,000 through alternative-delivery awards.
Sewell said a large Laurel County project is currently advertised for bid and that KYTC anticipates additional asset-management work — resurfacing and bridge projects — will be let before year-end. "We do expect between now and the end of the year to have around $300,000,000 more, estimated, in projects, to let through construction this year," he said, describing the figure as an estimate.
The presentation noted the department is balancing a mix of federal and state-funded projects and that project mixes change year to year. Committee members asked follow-up questions about asphalt tonnage drops and whether scheduled lettings will be enough to keep local contractors working; Sewell said KYTC expects forthcoming resurfacings to help close the gap but acknowledged project mix affects tonnage year over year.
The committee did not take formal action on the lettings update; members requested follow-up briefings on specific district schedules and on how the department is sequencing asset-management projects.
