Pearl Hill Street residents press city for help over proposed UI monopoles

Residents of Pearl Hill Street asked the Board of Aldermen to support their challenge to a project by the utility (UI) that would place 90-to-120-foot monopoles and associated access roads behind homes, cut trees and potentially lower property values.
"Backyards are being destroyed," said Jane Bonanzio, who asked the board to litigate with the city on behalf of residents and to coordinate with other municipalities pursuing similar actions. She described missing certified notices to impacted homeowners and said the project had not been clearly explained to affected neighbors.
Aldermen acknowledged the complaint and said staff and the mayor's office had followed up with UI; one alderman noted that the mayor and his staff had already attempted to contact UI and that the lease modifications on a separate agenda item had been adjusted following neighborhood input.
Why it matters: the monopole project raised standard land-use and public-notice issues for affected neighborhoods and asked the city to take an active role in pursuing relief from the utility provider.
