Huachuca City Council on March 26 directed staff to apply the town's zoning, health and safety, building and neighborhood-preservation codes more actively in response to resident complaints.
Town Manager Suzanne Harvey told the council staff and the Police Department were prepared to pursue more aggressive enforcement but cautioned that "we are prepared to be aggressive, but... some people may fight us on it and it may end up in court," creating potential costs for the town. Council members, led by Mayor Johann Wallace, confirmed they wanted "active enforcement" and emphasized equal application of the law.
What happens next: Staff will implement stepped-up enforcement actions and bring back any policy or budget items that require council approval. The council did not adopt new ordinances at the March 26 meeting; it gave direction that staff may need to back with cost estimates and legal considerations if enforcement actions lead to litigation.
