Board honors academic, STEM and athletic champions from district schools

Trustees recognized South El Monte High School’s Academic Decathlon, SeaPerch and boys basketball teams, and Rosemead High School’s Math B champions; principals, coaches and students accepted certificates and spoke about the work and community support behind the achievements.
The board used the April 1 meeting to honor student accomplishments across several campuses. Superintendent Dr. Zuniga and Principal Dr. Jorge Morales highlighted South El Monte High School’s academic decathlon team, which won division honors at the LA County competition and qualified for the state championship. Principal Morales named lead teacher Mario Lopez and mentor Oscar Castillo as key supporters of the program and thanked staff and parents.
The board also presented certificates to the boys basketball coaching staff after the team advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 8 championship game, and recognized Rosemead High School for becoming back‑to‑back Math B champions. Teacher‑coaches and several student winners spoke briefly from the dais, expressing appreciation for teacher support and family involvement.
"They won 1st place in division 2 of the February LA County Academic Decathlon championships," Principal Jorge Morales said while introducing the academic team. Board members praised the broad set of programs — academics, athletics and STEM — as exemplars of district opportunities for students and encouraged families to continue supporting school activities.
