Lake Central opts out of state 'teacher appreciation' grant under revised eligibility rules

"We are not opting into the teacher appreciation grant for this upcoming school year," Castaneda said, explaining the policy change shifts language from 'shall participate' to 'may participate' so districts may decline. She added that some districts with different staffing profiles continued to participate, and that the district's local referendum made it less dependent on the grant as a compensation mechanism.
Castaneda said she will watch legislative developments during the budget session to see if the grant's structure is reconsidered. The board approved the policy language change that allows opting out.
