District plans turf replacement at Hornville and Destrehan high schools, staff cite improved safety and lower maintenance

The committee reviewed a turf-replacement plan that staff said is part of the long-range facilities program. Staff and vendor representatives described a turf system they vetted at a national conference that promises lower surface temperatures, improved GMAX performance and minimal grooming needs.
The presenter described testing data and expected lifecycle performance: "This new system, the test data that they provided, shows that after... like a normal life cycle of the turf, like 8 years, 10 years... it shows that I wanna say, it was an average of 120s," the vendor said, referring to GMAX testing compared with older systems. Staff said the system uses a tighter fiber and no loose infill, reducing maintenance and improving longevity.
For Destrehan, staff said they will install a lift station similar to the one at Hornville to improve stormwater evacuation after heavy rain. Installation for the turf itself should take no more than 60 days, staff said, with scheduling timed to finish before the football season; coaches will use grass practice fields if necessary until installation completes.
