Health staff warns labs may be overwhelmed as nitrate testing requirement expands

Staff member (Speaker 1) told the board that state-level changes will likely require annual nitrate testing for tourist rooming houses, hotels and Airbnbs and that counties are already concerned about where to send rising sample volumes.
"Within the next year or so, there hasn't been a definitive date, but that will go into statute that they now will have to test nitrates," the staff member said. She said many counties previously sent nitrate samples to UW Oshkosh and that labs are at or near capacity, so smaller counties are planning for added sample volume (80–100 more samples anticipated in one lab MOU discussed).
Board members discussed sample-processing logistics and the potential need for MOUs or additional lab partners to avoid multi-week turnaround times.
