Atoka approves construction of 300-foot communications tower, trims embedded lighting package

The Atoka City Council voted to approve a proposal from RFIP to construct a new 300-foot self-supporting communications tower but removed the embedded lighting package from that contract to reduce direct city costs.
City staff explained that the project is eligible for a 50% state/ARPA reimbursement provided the work is completed and closed out by Dec. 15. "OEM has gave us 50% of this grant to do this project up into $241,923.30," the presenter said, adding that the city must meet the project deadline and closeout requirements to retain the funds. The RFIP contract price listed on the agenda was $387,211.60; councilors moved to approve the RFIP proposal without the $23,007.89 lighting package, producing a reduced project total the council cited in the motion.
Staff and council members discussed tower siting, guide-wire concerns and capacity; presenters said the new self-supporting tower would not require guide wires, would provide higher load capacity for future needs and is expected to replace the existing, aging tower. The motion to approve RFIP (less the lighting package) passed on a roll-call vote.
