Shiocton trustees approve stricter fireworks-permit rules after neighbor complaints

Clerk Laurie Sweeney told the board that after the week following the Fourth of July there were multiple neighborhood concerns about debris on vehicles, roofs and in pools, and that the village typically issued 3–4 permits in past years but this year issued 12. She said she surveyed other clerks and received 17 replies; the most common permit requirements were proof of liability insurance, a detailed list of fireworks, shorter permit windows, and earlier submission deadlines.

"The application requires proof of Liability ins., One name responsible for lighting them off, applications between May 1-June 30, detailed list of type and quantity of fireworks, and anyone with prior complaints in the last 3yrs cannot have a permit," Clerk Sweeney told trustees. She said Clerk Sweeney, Chief Knapp and Director of Public Works Dan Nabbefeld revised the application and presented it to the Board, noting certain locations may be flagged as unsafe for fireworks and that if the Village issues a permit it could face liability for severe property damage.

Trustees approved the updated fireworks-permit application by motion (M/S/P Brownson/Dawes). The new rules aim to narrow permit windows, require proof of insurance, identify a single responsible person, and bar repeat complainers from receiving permits for three years.
